About KNOW IT Security
People don°t learn to swim by being thrown into the middle of a deep pond. We all do much better wading in slowly, or playfully learning in the shallows.
As a new adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University teaching business managers about computer and network security, I quickly learned that throwing the students into complex textbooks and boring lectures was not appropriate. It was better to have them read an entertaining novel related to the topic and use the novel°s key points to introduce complex concepts and issues.
KNOW IT Security is a story written to allow executives,
managers, and students to wade from the shallows into that deep
pond we call “IT security”. Loosely based on an actual
security assessment that I participated in several years ago, this
book provides the reader with a:
- low-tech introduction to IT system and Internet security threats,
vulnerabilities, and countermeasures.
- business-based strategy to review IT systems for
security needs.
- total security approach to securing IT systems using technical,
physical, personnel, and procedural security methods.
My hope is that KNOW IT Security will give the reader
an entertaining introduction to IT security basics, and increased
confidence when dealing with technologies and technology-related
issues.
